Fishing tackle can be a complicated thing if you are not knowledgeable about the gear, type of fish and environment you will be fishing in. Just going to a sporting goods store and buying a bunch of stuff based on what the salesperson is telling you are not the best ways to go about filling your tackle box. Here are a few recommendations on how to go about searching for the right tackle.

Internet Research:

The single biggest mistake fishermen make is not doing enough research on tackle. Now days with the internet and tens if not hundreds of different magazines worldwide it is not hard to find out the quality and performance of a certain kind of fishing gear. For instance if I was interested in a new kind of metal being used for a hook, I could easily start my research on the internet.

99% of the time I find a person in a forum that was using what I wanted to buy. I would contact the fisherman directly, ask more information and then continue my search. I usually either find three good personal reviews on the product or I talk to the fishermen directly through private forum email.

Magazine Research:

Another good way to research a product is through magazines. There are some wonderful magazines that are easy to find right in your local bookstore or grocery store. Magazines like “Field and Stream”, “Sport Fishing”, “Fishing”, “Fly Rod &Reel” the list goes on and on. You can even find magazines from different parts of the world that write article reviews on products.

With these two simple research methods, you will be off on a great start filling your tackle box with everything you need. One very important thing not to forget when trying out your new fishing gear; if you buy a product share your experience. Log into a forum and let people know what you like about the fishing product, its performance, the negatives and positives of the gear. It is a”pay it forward” kind of thing for trout fishermen. One good deed will be repaid with another.
