Choosing the right fly fishing rod
Most people are not familiar with fly fishing. There are a vast mount of fly fishing locations around the globe. If you are interested in fly fishing and are ready to buy your first rod, there are few things to consider before making your purchase.
The first thing you need to decide is what type of fish are going to try to catch. You should decide if you want to catch salt water or fresh water fish. The type of fish has a lot to do with what fishing rod to go with.
If you decide that you will most likely be fishing in salt water, you are going to need a rod for salt water fishing. Since salt water is very corrosive, salt water rods are made of anti corrosive materials that will hold up better. They are also sturdier and have bigger guides that allow bigger knots to go through. Also, keep in mind when you are buying a salt water rod, that some lines are meant for tropical weather fishing to prevent stickiness in hot weather and they are not recommended for cold weather conditions. If you decide to fish mainly in tropical waters and the Midwest, you are more than likely be best of with a salt water rod.
If most of your fishing is done in wide open water, a long rod is most likely your best bet. If you are fishing in a tight river you will need a shorter rod since you can not make full use of a long rod. In rough waters, it is recommend that you get a long two handle rod. This will give you better control when you need. It is recommended that you make sure that you can handle your rod to its full ability and that you are comfortable with it. Generally a 9 foot rod is recommended for men and women should go with an eight foot rod.
The heaviness of a fishing rod is categorized by numbers. The lower the number the lighter the rod. For bigger fish like Tarpon you should purchase a rod around number 12. Next, you need to consider the bend of the rod. There are fast rods that only bend at the tip. The medium rod bends int he middle and is therefore easier to control. The slow rod bends the whole length of the rod and is recommended for small ponds and rivers, since the slower the rod the shorter the casting range.
As you cans see, there are numerous options when buying a fishing rod. If you are in doubt consult an experienced professional in the sports store. He or she will be able to help you pick the right rod for you.
