Facts About Kids Worm Farming

Giving kids worm farming opportunities is a great way to teach children about worms in general.

This activity gives children an inside look into the daily life of a worm, which isn’t something many people get to experience.

Most people make the mistake of thinking that worms are not very important to our ecosystem, mainly because they don’t like worms. However worms, like other creatures that we don’t always like, play an important role in our ecosystem.

One of the most important things that children learn from watching worms in action is how important different worms are to the soil.

Worms play an important role in enriching the soil due to their burrowing and feeding behaviors. By enriching the soil, worms help our plants grow healthy and strong. Like all living creatures worms need to be fed and this is forms part of worm farming.

The best food for worms is fruit and vegetables. Do stay away from onions and garlic though because worms find the smell offensive. Fruit and vegetables are a great choice for any worm, especially if they are mixed with water, because of how easily they are composted by the worms.

Cutting the fruit and vegetables into small pieces and blending them with water makes it easier for the worms to find and eat.  All this will be beneficial for children in a classroom setting.

When feeding the worms in your farm you will need to be careful not to overfeed them – and also to feed them correctly. To properly feed your worms place the food along the top layer of soil and spread it out as evenly as possible. Overfeeding the worms can result in several bad odors because the food you are giving the worms begins to rot.

You can also get bad odors depending on what you are feeding the worms, such as meat and dairy products; This is simply because they spoil faster than the worms can eat them.

If you do notice smells coming from your little farm you will want to gently turnover up the soil and also stop feeding the worms until all the food on the top of the soil has gone.

When placing this farm inside a classroom for students to study it is important to discuss the various aspects of the worm farm, including the different types of worms. Not all the farms will produce the same type of worms because different species of worms are suited for different types of jobs.

Red Wigglers are often used for composting because of how much they like to eat. These worms have huge appetites and they are very easy to breed. European Night Crawlers are best suited for a worm farm that is producing bait for anglers because they are very durable.

Worm farming gives children the opportunity to see the importance firsthand of worms in our ecosystem.

These kits will come with everything you need to get started but the best part is you can purchase them with or without the worms.
